Abu Abdullah Jabir bin Abdullah al-Ansari (ra) reported that a man questioned the Messenger of Allah (saw), saying: “Do you see, if I pray the prescribed (prayers), fast during Ramadhan, treat the lawful as permissible and treat the forbidden as prohibited, but do nothing more than that, shall I enter Paradise?” He (the Prophet) answered: “Yes.” (Muslim)

Abdullah ibn Abbas (ra) has said that “Some people used to give so much sadaqah that nothing would remain with them even for eating and they would be compelled to look for sadaqah from others. It was for this reason that the verse was revealed:’ And they ask thee what they ought to spend. Say that which is superfluous.’” (Al-Baqarah: 219).

A man came to Prophet Muhammad (saw) and asked: “O Allah’s Messenger! Which charity is the most superior in reward?” He replied: “The charity which you practice while you are healthy, niggardly and afraid of poverty and wish to become wealthy,” He told him further: “Do not delay it to the time of approaching death and then say: ‘Give so much to such and such, and so much (as it is too late).’” (Bukhari)
