Fruits for the Week

About the birth and mission of Jesus, Allah said in the Qur’an: “Then she pointed to him. They said: How can we talk to one who is in the cradle, a young boy? He (Jesus) spoke: Lo! I am the slave of Allah. He has given me the Scripture and has appointed me a Prophet, and has made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and has enjoined upon prayer and almsgiving so long as I am alive, and has made me dutiful toward her who bore me, and has not made me arrogant. Peace on me the day I die, and the day I shall be raised alive! Such was Jesus, son of Mary, a statement of the truth concerning which they doubt. It befitted not (the Majesty of) Allah that has should take unto Himself a son. Glory be to Him! When He decreed a thing, He said unto it only: Be! And it is.” (19: 29-35)

Christians claim that Jesus was born on December 25. This is totally wrong. The Qur’an states in Surah Mariam the following: “Then (one) cried unto her from below her, saying: Grieve not! The Lord has placed a rivulet beneath you. And shake the trunk of the palm tree toward you; you will cause ripe dates to fall upon you.” (19: 24-25).

Anyone with a sense of logic would be able to recognize the time of cultivation of dates from palm trees in the Middle East. It is normally the latter part of August and the first part of September. Therefore, one may ask how it happened that December was taken as the month of Jesus instead of August or September. The answer is simple. The Roman Empire has a national feast on December 25. It used to be a pagan society.

Later, they kept their pagan feast as it was and gave it a religious atmosphere, a religious taste, and a religious title. This took place after the Romans adopted Christianity as the religion of the state. The pagan feast remained a pagan feast without reference to Jesus. It was exploited by business people. They commercialized it so much that people could not appreciate the religious sanctity of the birth of Jesus.

Some people throughout the centuries used the occasion for the sake of fun. They enjoyed this noble feast by drinking, mixing, socializing, dancing, womanizing, and other vices. Throughout the centuries, people continued their pagan feasts by having Christmas parties. Unfortunately, every year, during the Christmas holidays, many innocent people in the world are killed because of drunken people.

The majority of Christians claim that Jesus Christ was born to save them from their sins. They may commit sins but they claim that as long as they believe in him, he will save them and forgive them for their sins.

The name of Jesus is not Christ. The latter name means crucified. Jesus’ name is Jesus the Massiah (Isa Al-Masih). Jesus was not the son of God but the son of the Virgin Mary (Isa bin Maryam).

Jesus was not crucified; it was another person who was made to look similar to him. In this respect Allah says in Surah An-Nisa’: “And because of their disbelief and their speaking against Mary a tremendous calumny; and because of their saying, ‘We slew the Messiah Jesus son of Mary, Allah’s Messenger,’ they slew him not nor crucified, but it appeared so unto them; and lo! Those who disagree concerning it are in doubt thereof; they have no knowledge thereof save pursuit of a conjecture; they slew him not for certain. But Allah took him up unto Himself. Allah was ever Mighty, Wise.” (4: 156-158).

Jesus was a slave and a servant of Allah. Allah says in Surah An-Nisa: “The Messiah will never scorn to be a slave unto Allah, nor will the favoured angles. Whoso scorn His service and is proud, all such will he assemble unto Him.” (4: 172). In Surah Maryam, Allah says on behalf of Jesus when he spoke in the cradle: “And has made me blessed wheresoever I may be, and has enjoined upon me prayer and almsgivings so long as I remain alive.” (19: 30-31)

Jesus was a messenger of Allah to the children of Israel asking them to believe in the past revelations, and informing them about the advent and the coming of Prophet Muhammad (saw).

In this respect Allah says in Surah As-Saff: “And when Jesus son of Mary said: O children of Israel, indeed I am the messenger of Allah to you confirming what came before of the Torah and bringing good tidings of a messenger to come after me, whose name is Ahmad. But when he came to them with clear evidence, they said, “This is obvious magic.” (61: 6)
